The film

Identity is not a box on a form.

Apartheid classification gave the Khoisan-identifying people of Hangberg a label they never chose. Three decades after that system formally ended, the label still governs who gets housing, who gets counted, and who gets policed.

The film sits inside that contradiction. It was shot across five years of returning to the same streets, the same families, the same fights, with the camera invited in rather than pointed. Police brutality, land dispossession, structural violence and the daily work of holding a community together are all here, but the frame belongs to the people living it.

Production ran on no external funding. That meant slower, and it meant harder, but it also meant no editorial hand on the shoulder and no deadline forcing a conclusion the community had not reached.

Afterlife

The film did not stop at release.

It entered lecture halls. Anthropology and psychology departments took it up as teaching material, and it now anchors discussion on land, identity, race and post-apartheid social dynamics at some of the region's most established institutions.

That is the measure that matters here. Not a festival laurel, but a syllabus.
